ATI HD4850 vs. GeForce GTS 250

ATI HD4850 is part of the Radeon HD 4k graphic cards family and it features the RV770 Pro GPU which is a 965 milions transistors chip build on 55nm technology. The default clock speeds are 625 MHz for the GPU and 1,986 MHz for the memory (DDR3).

GeForce GTS 250 is actually a rebranded 9800 GTX which was an overclocked 8800 GTS. So it features a slightly revisioned version of the G92 GPU present in the 8800 series. The new G92b is a 754 milions transistors chip build on 55nm technology. The default clock speeds are 738 MHz on the GPU, 1,836 MHz on the shaders, and 2,200 MHz on the memory (DDR3). However it is now a more mature chip now and the power consumption and temperature have improved compared with the 9800 GTX.

How to predict a hard disk failure

A few days ago a friend started to have some problems with his laptop as it randomly does not detect the hard disk. The usual suspects would be a hard disk failure or IDE cable or IDE controller problem. On a desktop it is easy to check the IDE cable or the IDE controller just by testing with a different cable or just by connecting the hard disk on a different IDE but since it has problems with his laptop he can not do these checks so he's only option was to run some tests to check if his hard disk is failing and hope it is not the IDE controller on the motherboard.

Week 28 recap

Week 28, July 6 – July 13
Nvidia has not disclosed yet what chips are affected by the “certain die/packaging material” problem.
““While we have not been able to determine a root cause for these failures, testing suggests a weak material set of die/package combination, system thermal management designs, and customer use patterns are contributing factors.”
