No more hardware, no more busy phone lines, phone call charges, unreliability of phone connection. Hardware modems are completely substituted by virtual software modems.
United Kingdom - Liverpool- FabulaTech today announced it has launched Virtual Modem 2.0.2 which fully substitutes hardware modems. It allows any modem communications applications to interact via LAN or the Internet. Application "dials" remote IP address instead of making a dial-direct call using
hardware modem. Moreover, it looks as if the application worked with hardware modem.
Virtual Modem creates and uses virtual modems instead of hardware modems. At that network connection (LAN or the Internet) is used for data exchange instead of phone lines. Applications exchange data as if they were connected via physical phone lines. Virtual modems look like hardware modems for all communications applications.
"Usually hardware modems are used to connect communications applications over standard phone lines. Common solutions have serious drawbacks like phone call charges, you have to pay for each phone call. It's even worse if you make international phone calls. Busy phone line is another headache, you cannot use your phone line for other purposes while using modem connection. And last, unreliability of phone connection: besides phone connections are not reliable, they are low-speed", said Alan Rurke, one of the software developers.
"Let me explain in simpler words how the program works. Application A on local computer "makes a call" using virtual modem #1. Virtual modem #1 on local computer connects to virtual modem #2 on remote computer over the network. Virtual modem #2 accepts network connection and initiate "incoming call" for application B. Application B reacts on "incoming call" from virtual modem #2 as if it was real incoming call initiated by hardware modem", added Keith Morgan, a software developer.
Virtual Modem:
-Automatically network-enables modem communications applications without software changes.
-There are no charges for phone calls (you pay only for Internet access).
-You need neither phone line nor modem.
-Speed is far higher then hardware modems have.
-Location-independent. Virtual Modem can be used anywhere in the world where Internet access is available.
-You can limit network access to your virtual modem using any firewall software.
-Applications use virtual modems directly from virtual serial ports or through TAPI.
-Virtual modems can accept "incoming calls" from other virtual modems.
-Phone book. It allows you to simplify switch to virtual modems from hardware modems. You can specify telephone number corresponding to IP address (or computer name) and TCP-port of remote virtual modems.

Virtual Modem is successfully used in such spheres as financial systems, credit card transaction, legal information database access, real estate information systems, device control and data acquisition, building automation, security systems.
