We may not realize it, but digital photography, affordable formost consumers, exists less than a decade. Before the digital photo era, we used totake pictures with analogue cameras, capturing light and scenes on film. Processingfilm and printing photographs was the result of a chemical process.
Most people have a shoe box full of old photographs and negatives. Most printedphotographs will have degraded colours and will need restoration. Unless thenegatives of those pictures are in good condition, there is no way to restore theprinted photograph. Of a large number of photographs, most people will not have anegative in their possession.
"Even with negatives in the box, my experience is that these have been degraded aswell," says Erik Vlietinck, who wrote the 45-page tutorial. "That's why I decided towrite this eBook. IT will teach people how to quickly get discolored prints back totheir original state." Saving those pictures digitally will additionally protectthem against further degrading.
The eBook tutorial teaches people how to scan their photographs, and how to useSilverFast, Photoshop or Aperture to correct the digital copies so they match theprinted photo back when it was shot by the photographer in the sixties, seventies oreighties. "I wanted to include iPhoto as well," the author explains, "but iPhoto'srestoration tools are too limited in their abilities."
The result is a tutorial that will help people who have a scanner and Photoshop LE,Photoshop Elements or Aperture.
