Unconditional love can be simply defined as love without conditions. It is lovewithout giving without expecting anything in return. A good example of this kind oflove is the love of a mother for her son. No matter what the son does, be it good orbad, the mother will always love her son.
Some may think that all love is unconditional because the notion that love withconditions like I love you if or I love you because is not love at all.
To love someone is very easy to do especially if that someone is close to you orfamiliar to you like a parent, a son or a daughter, or even a friend. But lovingsomeone unconditionally means loving regardless of your relationship with thatsomeone or how he or she has treated you in the past.
To better understand what unconditional love is, let us compare it to conditionallove. Conditional love is love earned by meeting certain conditions unconsciously orconsciously. Unconditional love on the other hand is not earned but instead it isgiven freely without expecting anything in return. For conditional love to beattained there should be something in exchange and is limited while unconditionallove is limitless and is not measurable.
In Christianity, unconditional love is most often used to describe how God loveseach person individually regardless of how humans feel about him.
In summary, unconditional love is an act moved by feelings regardless of whateverthe will is. Unconditional love is something special and is free.
Attaining Unconditional Love
Technically speaking, you may have already attained unconditional love when youbecame a parent and had your first child. But when you speak of attainingunconditional love in the sense of matrimony or partnership then that is anotherstory.
Most often than not, love in a relationship usually is not without conditions. It isinevitable that along the course of the relationship, conditions are set every timeto make improvements in it. Even those couples who claim that they fell in love atfirst sight will still sooner or later establish conditions to keep or evenstrengthen their feelings for each other.
So the question stands, is unconditional love attainable? Common sense would tell usthat this feat is quite improbable and even impossible to make. But the good thingabout it is that we can try. You can attempt to practice unconditional love and liveby it.
Practicing Unconditional Love
The initial step in practicing unconditional love is by remembering thatunconditional love is a way of being and it is more of a feeling than an act. Tostart off, try to find a quiet place and let your thoughts fill with love. Think ofall the people that you love and who love you back. Bathe in this kind of feeling.
The second step is to love yourself unconditionally first. Before you can fully lovesomebody unconditionally it is very important that you can love yourselfunconditionally. With this, you will be able to experience a sense of understandingand acceptance for yourself. This feeling that you develop will be mirrored back tothe people around you and soon you will be able to feel a difference on how you lookat them.
Some will argue that love is not love unless you share it with somebody. So thethird step in practicing unconditional love is to share this love with otherpersons. It would be most effective if you start off with little things at first.Perhaps you could start sharing it with your immediate family or anybody who isclose to you. Then you gradually move on to something bigger like acquaintances andother people you meet in the future.
Once you have developed this feeling and it comes naturally to you, the proper andright actions will no doubt follow. You will be able to react on certain situationsbasing on how you feel instead of what good it can do for you.
Attaining unconditional love may not be humanly possible, but that does not meanthat we should not always strive to give it in its wholesomeness and purity.
