Anselmo, Calif.  April 17, 2007  Joyent, a provider ofdeveloper tools for Rails applications, will make the code for its online/offlinecomponent available to the Rails open source software development community.Developers providing open sourced (free) applications will have access to theSlingshot source code, enabling them to build hybrid applications that enable onlineand offline accessibility. Joyent Slingshot enables Rails to break free of the browser. It is lightweight andcustomizable, allowing developers to deploy Ruby on Rails applications that runonline and offline with a simple and transparent data synchronization. The framework also provides an extensible drag and drop abstraction layer. Developers can hook into an applicationÂ's existing data import/export mechanismswithout modifying any application code. It also facilitates the ability to deploycode updates and migrations, no matter how long a user has been offline."Joyent wanted to give something back to the Ruby on Rails community, and withSlingshot, developers can further differentiate Rails from other Web developmentframeworks," said David Young, CEO.  Slingshot fuses the best of both Webapplications and desktop applications combining the ability to rapidly develop,deploy and update, a new hybrid of productivity applications. Slingshot is currently in beta with a select group of third party applicationsworking.
