It was a love of scrimshaw that hooked President John F. Kennedy on collecting. Itwas a passion for paperweights that fueled the French writer ColetteÂ's glasscollection. The British writer George Bernard Shaw amassed cigar bands and onceasked his American lawyer to get him a complete set of cigar bands printed in theU.S.
The passion to collect expands over time. The more you focus, the more you learnthe important distinctions in a field.

Buy the best you can afford. ThatÂ's another point I want to stress. ItÂ's muchbetter to buy one good painting than five average ones. Money follows quality, andIÂ'm talking good quality. This applies to almost everything I can think of.
