May 2 2002Millions of users tuned in to their favorite internet radio stations, but theydidn t heard anything rather than a numb silence.
This was in order to mark their protest against recently proposed royalty rate ofone dollar (to the music company) per song they usually broadcast to theirlisteners. This rate was proposed by Copyright Arbitration Panel, would directlyeffect hundreds of small radio stations and could force many to shut down theirbroadcast s for now and for ever.
Webcasters were proposing that the rate should be set as the percent of theirrevenue s, not based on cost per song. The percentage could be anything between 10percent to 20 percent.
The whole community of webcasters & the online listeners were in a state of penury,over the consequences of this one dollar per song law getting rectification from thebench of regulators.
In order to show their anger ,they deluged the street of New York City and broughtthe city on a virtual stand still.
Atlast,their effort pay off on May 21,2002, when federal regulators opted to scrapthe whole issue into the bin. The plea for cost per song was withdrawn from thelegislative house and once again all the fears for the future of online radio wererelinquished for ever.
