The videos in DTP Master are in convenient Flash format, are available over theInternet and on CD-ROM. Desktop publishing software, and all materials used in thevideos are included in the package, enabling the student to work alongside Shaun andduplicate what is being done in the tutorial before embarking on their own projects,or using other types of software.
The idea for the project began when Shaun first started working freelance in thefilm industry in the early 1990s. Shaun says: "Like most freelance technicians, Iused to send out my resume and cover letter to production companies to try and getwork, but I just wasn't making any impact I came up with the idea for an A5 sizedbooklet with a flowchart on the front, credits and information about previousproductions on the inside, and contact details on the back."
That started Shaun on the route to desktop publishing. But, it wasn't easy. Afteryears of searching for a good how-to manual, Shaun ended up learning how to desktoppublish on his own.
"I figured there must be a lot of other people who found desktop publishingdifficult," says Shaun "so I used my video making skills to put together an easy tofollow video tutorial series, and made it available via the Internet for easyaccess."
DTP Master follows the same principles as Shaun's other video training package:Photoshop Master. Rather than adopt a structured, lesson-based approach, the videosare arranged so students can work at their own pace and explore the elements ofdesktop publishing they want to know about. "Those who are new to DTP can use it asa step-by-step course, while those with more experience can treat it as a referencetool" says Shaun. "I've tried to concentrate on the sort of things people would useDTP for most often in their home, school, business, club or organisation. Thesoftware that comes with the package is more than adequate for most applications, and people who want to learn about more sophisticated DTP software will find it mucheasier after they've mastered the basic principles here."
All the videos are fully interactive and can be stopped, started, and accessed in anon-linear fashion. A companion eBook clarifies some of the more confusingtechnical aspects of desktop publishing - with sections devoted to technical terms, paper types and sizes and printing methods.
