Developers everywhere have hugely adopted PHP. Netcraft[www.netcraft.com] conducted a review on use of PHP over 47,173,415 domains inFebruary 2004. This review revealed that at least 15,204,474 domains out of thoseinstalled PHP. The total percentage of success was 32%. This fact implies that thepopularity of PHP is growing steadily.
PHP is a popular open-source programming language generally used for buildingserver-side applications and dynamic web pages; currently it is used to develop somesoftware, too.
History of PHP:
PHP is the brainchild of Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994, who initially working on a webdevelopment project on C or Perl, found it hard to overcome all the problems as thecode problem overlapped from one to another. The unpublished initial module of PHP was nothing but library of some most commonly used C functions.
This version was created to enhance the reusability features of an open-sourceproject. The first publicly published package was called Personal Home Page Tools;the basic function of this tool was to solve some common problems occurring in apersonal home page.
But it was not the end; Rasmus implemented a larger C code to add features likedatabase connectivity and building up dynamic web applications. The Rasmus's ideabehind the PHP/FI was to perform all the general tasks when a user is submitting aform.
The PHP/FI 2.0 was already making its mark by 1997.It was very popular although ithas spent most of the life period in beta version; the alpha version of PHP/FI waspublished in November 1997. Gradually it converted into PHP 3.0(alpha).
The PHP project so far was a single-member project, but the evolution of PHP 3.Oversion was made by two Israeli students - Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski in 1997along with Rasmus Lerdorf. They co-ordinated with each other after finding someshortcomings on developing some e-commerce applications. The joining of new projectmembers in the PHP project team enhanced the progress of the project.
The backbone of the PHP3.0 was its sound adaptability features. The reasons behindits success were the robust and lucrative functional services like severaldatabases, protocols and APIs, which were really acclaimed by the users. It also hadthe object oriented syntax support, which has made it more consistent language. .PHP4.0
They were not happy with the operational effectiveness in some complex applicationsand also increase in the modularity features of PHP3.0's code. It took almost twoyears to officially release the PHP 4.0; the newer version was compliant with moreweb servers, database connectivity approaches, HTTP sessions and buffering output -just to handle user input more securely.
