Cockermouth, Cumbria, UK - February 9 2007. Tech-Pro Limitedannounces the release of a free screen saver for Windows. Tech-Pro GreenSaver is ascreen saver that can shut down or hibernate a Windows PC if it is left unattendedfor more than a predefined period. It can reduce energy consumption and save moneyby shutting down computers that the users forget to switch off.
Tech-Pro director Julian Moss says: "I was walking through a city at night recently,and was surprised to see computers running screen savers in darkened offices. Ithought: what a waste of energy and money! It occurred to me that a screen savercould have a built-in timer that could shut down the computer after it had run for acertain time, so we developed Tech-Pro GreenSaver to do just that."
A typical PC uses about 300 watts of power while running compared to just 3 wattswhile shut down or in hibernation. Shutting the computer down when not in use cantherefore result in a considerable energy- and cost-saving, and help to reducecarbon emissions.
GreenSaver has a static display to minimize processor usage and power consumptionwhilst it is running. Tech-Pro found that an animated display caused many computersto burn more power than a static one. "Running a conventional animated screen saverthat no-one looks at most of the time really is a waste of money" says Moss. "Inthese environmentally conscious times we really need to save energy where we can.Not using an animated screen saver, and turning off computers that aren't beingused, are two easy ways to cut energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint atminimal personal inconvenience."
GreenSaver is freeware.
