Space Hound 4 Safely Manages Your Duplicate Files
Fineware Systems has released Space Hound 4, a Windows 2000/XP utility that lets yourecover valuable disk space by sniffing out duplicate, obsolete or lost files onyour hard drive. Space Hound provides a battery of tools that let you determinewhich files you need and which ones you can safely delete from your system.
Space Hound can generate lists of duplicate files based on criteria as simple asyour drive name or perform complex searches using complex folder selection, filemasks, sizes, dates, attributes, and keywords. When searching for duplicate files,Space Hound can examine multiple drives and perform five different kinds ofduplicate file searches: It can find files with duplicate filenames, files withduplicate filenames that are truly duplicates, files which are identical to eachother despite having different filenames, files compared without regard to fileextension, and a Microsoft Word Document content search that ignores filedifferences unrelated to content. In addition to deleting, copying, or moving, SpaceHound lets you create space-saving .zip archives for files that you no longer needto keep on your hard drive.
Unlike dangerous sweep or cleanup programs, Space Hound deletes nothing from yourhard drive. It identifies candidates for deletion based upon easy-to-definecriteria, and gives you tools to examine the files before disposing of them. SpaceHound's Duplicate File Suggestion feature offers expert advice on which files can besafely eliminated when duplicates are found. A unique dependency validation featureprotects you from deleting files that should be left alone. Once the duplicates havebeen identified, you have additional options for managing them which include toolsfor removing all duplicates from selected drives or folders as well as removing allcopies of a files except the most recent instance.
There are file viewers that let you examine your text, graphics, fonts andmultimedia files, as well as a built-in hexadecimal viewer, and INI and XML filetree displays. For further analysis, you can export Space Hound's reports todatabase and spreadsheet formats. These sophisticated tools can help you manage yourfiles, and uncover files that you thought were lost.
Another new feature with this release is a powerful folder synchronization tool thatshows you the differences between folders at the file content level in addition tosimply identifying missing files or files with different dates.
To help you zoom in on the files that are using up your disk drive, Space Hound'sStorage Structure Map gives you storage totals for any directory and its nested subdirectories.
Space Hound can display all of your application's programs, components and systemelements. You can even look at the version information for each element. Space Houndwill search for embedded text within files, and can perform proximity searches forwords that are near each other in the files.
