Email communication is a process of SMTP servers exchangingsimple greeting commands and after the friendly talk the message content isdelivered to the appropriate server. Spam filtering can be done both at this SMTPserver communication process and at the actual message content level.

Content can be scanned using statistical systems based on prelearned databases ofspam and not-spam messages. Furthermore checksums of spam messages are often storedin a large database to avoid copies of spam messages already detected to bedelivered to the recipient. Since spammers keep randomly changing their messages, checksum filters are onlyeffective when the spam messages are similar and hence the spammer has to spend moreeffort on his sending system to avoid such filtering. Statistical systems howevercan make much more advanced predictions about the classification of an email even ifthe message has never been seen before. Generally it is not sufficient to use asingle method; combining different filtering methods available results in increasedperformance.
