the entire trip we did not encounter a single car attendantor crew member who smiled, was pleasant or even was in the same category as the crewmember on the Hong Kong train. When the lady car attendant came in to check ourtickets and had out the "token cards" that I could not understand what the purposewas when they were then exchanged again before we arrived in Lhasa, she was able tosay "tickets". She was not pleasant nor was she in any way concerned that we were inthe process of cleaning up the compartment. The cars each had a western toilet compartment that pleased us immensely. With myreally worn out knees and Elva's just very stiff from age, this was especiallywelcome. However, the western toilet in our car was not functioning and was closed.We then went one car forward to use that toilet. When Elva needed the use of thetoilet in the night there was no toilet paper available. The female car attendantwas in the small car attendant compartment and Elva asked for toilet paper. In theladies apparently normal "gruff" manner, she understood there was no toilet paperavailable on the train. Here is a National Transportation Icon that took hundreds ofmillions of Yuan to build and put into service, and the train does not have anytoilet paper? How doe the normal Chinese efficiency and attention to details thatwe see every where in the country allow this necessary item to not be available? The woman shut her door and left Elva to go to our compartment to obtain Kleenexfrom her purse. Apparently when the stop was made at Golmud very early in the morning for crewchange and engine change, there was toilet paper put on board. However, the supplywas totally used before noon. Again, why is such a necessity short supplied? Irealize that with open regular toilet paper rolls, where people can take the roll,where there may be a shortage, the people will tend to take a roll so they will havepaper to use. This occur in any large public use facility. Like in airports,stadiums, large museums and the like, locked paper containers with one or even twolarge 1/3 meter across size giant rolls of paper. With all the engineering skillthat went into this planning of these trains and this essential public use need wasoverlooked. This is a need that some one in a high position should see that isaddressed.
