NEW BRITAIN, CT (May 15, 2007) Â VRSim has been selected by theOffice of Naval Research to demonstrate its SimWelder product at Fleet Week NYC2007. Fleet Week is a New York tradition celebrating our Sailors, Marines and CoastGuard forces. This annual event provides an opportunity to witness first hand thelatest capabilities of today's Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team.
The Office of Naval Research will be featuring demonstrations of SimWelder aboardthe USS Wasp from May 24th to May 26th. Volunteers will be able to try their handat welding both GMAW ( MIG ) and SMAW ( stick ) in a variety of positions.
In 2003, VRSim was asked to assist in developing a prototype mixed reality systemfor welding training. Toward this end, a VR welding trainer was developed forGeneral Dynamics Electric Boat with funding provided by ManTech (U.S. NavyManufacturing Technology Program, which is a part of the Office of Naval Research)managed by the NJC (Naval Joining Center). The technical team consisted of GeneralDynamics Electric Boat, Edison Welding Institute, and VRSim. The simulation createda workable proof of concept. The widespread, positive response to the simulatorproved a sufficient impetus for VRSim to develop SimWelder with internal funding.
SimWelder (www.simwelder.com) is a cost effective, stand-alone appliance that helpstrain better welders faster. By giving students more weld passes and instructorsobjective feedback, SimWelder augments traditional training.
Using SimWelder, students enter an interactive virtual environment that mergescomputer-generated data with physical props. By simulating the welding process, nogas is burned, no metal is consumed, and no waste is created. Students get morepasses, instructors get better data, and companies save money.
Currently, SimWelder is deployed at Aberdeen Proving Ground to help the UnitedStates Army train better welders faster.
