About XaraXara has been developing low-cost mass-market software since the early years of theMicrocomputer era, in 1981. It has focused mostly on publishing related softwareproducts, starting from Wordwise, a hugely popular Word Processor in the '80s, todesktop publishing software (Impression) and graphics products in the '90s for theAcorn RISC computer. Xara's first Windows product, Xara Studio was quickly snappedup and marketed by Corel in the late '90s as Corel/Xara. The rights were acquiredback from Corel and it has since evolved into Xara X and the most recent XaraXtreme.
Xara has particularly strong technology and innovation history. It pioneered many ofthe graphics technologies and techniques used by the industry today. It was thefirst to introduce vector anti-aliasing, the first with vector transparency andgraduated transparency, the first with vector feathering. Many of its User Interfacetechniques have been adopted by the industry. The graphics engine that is at thecore of Xara Xtreme still remains the world's most powerful.
In late 2005 Xara committed to creating an Open Source version of Xara Xtreme, (LX)and in April 2006 released the first tranche of source code comprising about 90% ofthe million-line codebase under the GPL license.
The technologies used to create Xara Xtreme have been developed by Xara over theyears and incorporate many pioneering features. It has been modelled on thesuccessful Xara XÂ (sold for $179) as used by many professional graphics andillustration artists but has been significantly re-engineered to open it up tothird-party plug-in developers.
