Overview
Your Windows system comes with disk tools, like disk checking, bad sectors checking, defragmenting and there are even disk partition tool that lets you, among others, change drive letter and delete partition. However, there are times you want to resize your drive to much larger size by taking free space from another drive. Or, there are times you want to make sure your files are completely destroyed from the disk ensuring that no other recovery tool can bring them back. The stock Windows tool does not provide these features. You will need third party disk partitioning tools.
The application
There are a number of disk partitioning tools on the market and you may want to consider Aomei Partition Assistant which comes in 3 editions: Partition Assistant Home Edition (Freeware), Partition Assistant Professional Edition and Partition Assistant Server Edition. What makes this tool stand out from similar tool is that most of its actions do not require restarting your computer. This will save you time, because you can still continue your work while the tool is doing partitioning.
One thing to note before you use the software, though, in the FAQ section in the Manual it is mentioned that the tool does not work in multi-OS system (it specifically mentioned WinXP and Win9x). In such case, you won’t be able to start your Win9x. So take heed of this.
So, what the program does is pretty much similar to other disk partition tools. To name a few, it can extend and shrink partition; resize and move partition; merge and split partition.
If you have used similar disk partition tool, you will feel familiar and will get used to the interface quite immediately. If you haven’t used any disk partition tool, do not worry as the partition wizard will help you with what you intend to do.
Extending Partition
This might be one of the things you want to consider for choosing this as your disk partition tool. Extending Partition is done, unlike other similar tool, without requiring you to restart computer. The extending partition is done right in Windows environment.
This will be especially useful if you are in the middle of your work and, say, your drive C runs out of space. You are in need of space to install software but it tells you to free some space. The Partition Assistant can help you do it and you don’t have to restart your computer. It saves time and you can still continue your work.
Using the wizard, you need not worry about details. You only need to focus on how much the final disk space you want to have. Eventually, you will have the amount of space you need.
Wiping Partition
There may be sensitive data on your disk that you do not wish the world to know. Since the operation is not undoable you may want to be careful with this operation.
As you may have known, there are tools for recovering data which are deleted from your disk. For one reason, this might be useful for you if you accidentally deleted files that are still important to you. Or, after a while, you need files that have been long gone but are needed at the present. Unfortunately, the same tool might backfire if the files are too sensitive and you do not wish for them to be recovered. Wipe Partition will ensure that you leave no trace in your disk.
Password Protecting?
It gives the impression that Partition Assistant can password-protect your partition or your drive. It says in the Manual, “To protect your hard disk, partition, applications and data, Partition Assistant provides password protection.” Apparently, the password is only to password-protect the application itself. If you have set password, you can still access all of your partition without password.
Conclusion
The overall operation of Aomei Partition Assistant is easy to use. Complex partition operations can be made easy. One advantage the tool has that makes it stand out from similar tool is that the operation is done right inside Windows environment which requires no restarting your computer. If you are in the middle of your work, you can still continue while Partition Assistant is in the process of extending your partition. The Freeware edition covers much of your basic disk operation needs such as extending partition, wiping partition, disk/ bad sectors checking. And it works.
